PUGLIA, a wine Country
Puglia (or Apulia) is the Italian region located on the southeastern side of the Country. The terroir of the Puglia region, specifically the area of "Valle d'Itria" (in the circled pictured), will be our home given the following unique set of characteristics:
-
800 km (500 miles) of coastline
-
The distance from one coast to the other ranges from a few miles to a maximum of 55 miles
-
The Valle d’Itria is in the center of the region and roughly equidistant to either coast: 17 miles to the Adriatic
Sea and 24 miles to the Ionian Sea -
The average max temperature during the year is 32-33° C (89.6 - 91.4° F)
-
The average min temperature during the year is 2-3° C (35.6- 37.4° F)
-
The altitude of Valle d’Itria is between 350 and 450 m (approx.. between 1148 and 1476 feet) on the sea level,
receiving breeze from both seas. -
The composition of the soil is unique. Under a thin layer of red dirt, rich in Iron, we have many layers of “karst” rocks: porous rocks that slowly filter the rainwater until it reaches a bed of non-porous rocks, creating underground rivers. Also, this kind of soil composition allow the roots of the plants to absorb water and nutrients from the rocks.
